This painting exemplifies one of Tiger's most effective technical devices--placing people and objects in such a way that the viewer feels he is entering the picture. Here, the viewer is drawn up and away from the figure in the foreground to the peace pipe in the upper portion of the painting. In most of Tiger's paintings, backgrounds and middlegrounds are the exception.
In "Peace Offering", the painted warrior lays aside his weapons in exchange for the peace pipe, symbolizing the transition in the way of life for the American Indian. Exchanging war weapons for the peace pipe is also symbolic of the Great Spirit's call for all races to live together in peace. "Peace Offering" is one of Tiger's best loved paintings.
