"COLD, COLD JOURNEY"

This painting is probably a representation of the historic "Trail of Tears". Aptly named, this east-west route became the burial ground for thousands of American Indians who lost their lives due to mistreatment by the United States soldiers and illness from the severe winter weather. Following Congress' passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the United States government began moving the already undernourished and inadequately clothed Indians tribes from their homelands in the eastern United States into the present state of Oklahoma. One of the primary reasons for removing the tribes was to permit expansion by white settlers. Particularly desirable were the gold rich lands occupied by the Cherokees, Chickasaw, Choctaws, and Creeks. For the frail, the young, and the old, this was, indeed, a cold, cold journey, and an indelible blight on the history of America.
