It is apparent from the man's tasseled belt he is getting ready for a stomp dance. At a present-day stompdance, families bring their own food and sleep on pallets on the ground or in their cars. Jeans, cowboy hats and boots, are usual attire for men. Tasseled belts are often worn by the dance leaders.
Exaggerating the commonplace is difficult for an artist, but in this painting Tiger has effectively accomplished it by making the everyday task of pulling on a boot appear significant. Using brown on brown with touches of white gives the painting an earthy quality. This natural color scheme was another innovation of Tiger's that has since become standard in traditional Indian art.
