"HIS SPIRIT CALLS"

The Plains Indian Tribes were a very spiritual people. Before their contact with the Christian missionaries, they traditionally placed their dead on scaffolds similar to those in the foreground of "His Spirit Calls". The Indians believed that the body should be placed between the physical world and the spiritual world to lessen the distance the spirit had to travel to the other side.

Tiger's deep spirituality is unmistakable in this painting where he personifies The Great Spirit calling His warriors home. Tiger himself believed the human spirit survived the death of the physical body, and a force greater than himself guided his work and his life.
