"OSCEOLA, DEFIANT ONE"

Chief Osceola, the great and noble chief of the Seminoles, was captured and imprisoned by U.S. soldiers when he was lured into a peace parley under a flag of truce. Several historical accounts say Osceola was able to escape through the prison bars by starving himself but was later re-captured. Osceola died at Fort Maultree, Charleston Harbor in a damp and dirty cell on January 30, 1838.

Tiger, who was himself part Seminole, was fascinated with Chief Osceola and used the chief as the central figure in several of his paintings. In "Osceola, Defiant One", Tiger depicts Osceola as a man full of strength and defiance, far from being defeated.
